Robert Mapplethorpe

Image
Robert Mapplethorpe was born in 1946 in Queens. He died in 1989 at the young age of 42. Mapplethorpe went to college at Pratt Institute where he studied drawing, painting, and sculpting. He first got into photography in 1970 when he was given his first Polaroid camera. He used those photos in collages that he liked to make. Five years later he got a Hasselblad medium format camera which he used to begin taking pictures of his friends and acquaintances. He also used it to work on commercial projects, cover art for albums, and pictures for  Interview  Magazine. Mapplethorpe produced photos that both challenged and adhered to the classical aesthetic standards throughout the 1980s. He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986. However, this did not stop him, instead, it gave him a reason to work harder. He accelerated his creative efforts, widened his scope of photographic inquiry, and accepted increasingly challenging commissions. Just a year before his death the Whitney Museum of American...

What Photography Means to Me

Marvin Heiferman never really explained to use what photography means to him. However he did explain what it was, its use, how it changed, and how it influences us. He stated "Photography was essential to each of our pursuits. And each person in the room, because of his or her training, responsibilities, or interests used and spoke about photography differently." Showing us that photography is not just an art but a tool used in many different pursuits. Since it is used in many different ways and for many different reasons it does not hold just one definition. However Marvin defined it well when he said "What made an effective, good, or even beautiful picture depended entirely on who was doing the looking and the talking." I believe that he meant that art holds a different sort of beauty for every person. A biologist might find photographs of a germ or virus beautiful while an archaeologist might find photos of an ancient civilization beautiful. As a wise man on...

Annie Leibovitz

Image
Annie Leibovitz is an American photographer whose main focus is on portraits, mainly of celebrities. She likes to photograph celebrities in revealing ways. Above are two of her photos. The image on the left is a very popular picture because it is of John Lennon and Yoko Ono just hours before he was killed. This is a very intimate picture and shows the connection between the two. This makes you think about what was going through their heads, and it makes you wonder if somehow they knew this was the last time they would be together. The image on the right is a photo of Whoopi Goldberg in a tub of milk. This image shows how Annie Leibovitz is always ready and she is great with timing. This image was not one of the planned ones, this was an accident. While Whoopie was in the tub she was laughing and slipped. At that moment Leibovitz took the shot and this is what she got. In many of Leibovitz’s photos, you can see how timing is everything because some of the best photos ...
