Robert Mapplethorpe

Robert Mapplethorpe was born in 1946 in Queens. He died in 1989 at the young age of 42. Mapplethorpe went to college at Pratt Institute where he studied drawing, painting, and sculpting. He first got into photography in 1970 when he was given his first Polaroid camera. He used those photos in collages that he liked to make. Five years later he got a Hasselblad medium format camera which he used to begin taking pictures of his friends and acquaintances. He also used it to work on commercial projects, cover art for albums, and pictures for  Interview  Magazine. Mapplethorpe produced photos that both challenged and adhered to the classical aesthetic standards throughout the 1980s. He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986. However, this did not stop him, instead, it gave him a reason to work harder. Marvin Heiferman and My Inspiration

     “WE ARE ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS NOW! ” . This was said because the development of the cell phone allows everyone to take pictures. I disagree with this statement. I disagree because it takes more than simply pushing a button to become a photographer. Like most art forms one must have a talent for expressing themselves. However, they also must have a drive to grow and learn how to improve. Developing and editing an i mage also takes time, effort, and skill. A photographer must capture a story in every image. A story that the viewer must figure out for themselves. It must have a deeper meaning than just a picture of a cute dog. So just because you can take a picture you are not a phot ographer. Man Ray

Cubism Surrealism      Man Ray’s Earliest works were paintings, where he experimented with cubism. He had been learning about art since high school. Her learned form his teachers and by going to art museums to teach himself. Over the years Man Ray learned of Surrealism and Dadaism. He then started to use these in his paintings. I found his paintings to be very colorful and bright. However, I found that they were missing that “WOW” moment and they didn’t really draw me in. I’m not saying he wasn’t a good painter, because I will never be able to paint that good, but they are missing something in them.         Man Ray then used the concept of Surrealism and Dadaism in his photography and photograms.
