Abelardo Morell

Abelardo Morell is a photographer who is well known for his camera obscura work. A camera obscura is created when a room is completely dark then a hole is created to let in a small amount of light. When this happens whatever is on the other side of the hole is projected on the opposite wall. What makes it really interesting is that it is projected upside down and if anything moves outside it moves inside too. So you can watch the outside world from inside a room. This shows how a camera works, except cameras have prisms inside to flip the image right side up. Morell found the idea interesting so he created a whole series with camera obscura's. In a regular camera obscure, the image is not always focused nicely, but Morell found a way to fix that. He created a lens that he attached to the hole so that he could focus the light. He wanted to show the world in interesting new ways and force a new perspective on the world.

I really like Morell’s work because it makes you see the world in new ways. As we move throughout our lives we grow accustomed to our surroundings, and maybe even a little numb towards them. However, when looking at the world through Morell’s it’s like looking at the world again for the first time. We as the viewers examine his work and start to notice things we have grown blind to. I also love the idea of bringing the world outside, inside. Unlike paintings, pictures, or plants the obscura protects a live world on your wall. Just the idea of it kind of sounds magical. I really enjoy looking at all of Morell’s work.
