Alex Stoddard

Alex Stoddard is an American photographer, raised in Georgia. He now lives in Los Angeles. He started his path as a photographer when he was a teenager. He took inspiration from the environment around him. He started by taking self-portraits. For every elaborate self-portrait, he became a new character using costumes and posing. He is a completely self-taught digital photographer. He relies on his instinct, what he sees, and his experience to create his photos. His concepts are best described as surrealist. While being a full-time high school student he undertook the 365 project. The 365 project is a project where the artist takes a picture every day for a year.

One of my favorite pictures that Alex Stoddard took is the above image. This image is from his 365 project. I love that you can tell how much time he puts into his work and how he does whatever it takes to get these images. Not only does he take the time to find the perfect spot to shoot his images he also takes his time finding the perfect way to set up his images. I really like how dark and creepy this image feels. To me, it looks as if he fell into a hole in the middle of the woods and some witch or creature is going to kill him. I like that all we see is the arm for the figure on the left. I also like that you can’t tell if it is a fake prop arm or if there was someone hidden off the side. Either way, you can tell that the location had to be perfect to give it this look. You can also tell that he ruffled up his hair and rubbed dirt on his face and shirt. The lighting is also very nice in this image. Its dark enough to add moodiness and mystery but its not so dark that we can’t see details in the image. It’s inspiring to see how immersed he gets in his images.
